Observers in Chungking consider that this indicates improved relations between the Chungking Government and the Communists.
The Chinese High Command announced that after driving the Japanese from Pachai appreciable progress had been made in pursuing the retreating enemy southwards.
Despite the deprivation of its best bases, American air force headquarters announced that its planes sank or damaged 16 Japanese freighters in farreaching sweeps. One vessel was sunk, two left sinking, and eight damaged on the Yangtze River. Others were hit off Shanghai, west of Formosa, and in Amoy harbour.
