COSTLY DRIVE
A pleasure drive from Upper Hutt to Petone proved an expensive journey for a young man who resides in Upper Hutt. Douglas Murray Moulder recently hired a rental car in Upper Hutt to attend a dance at Petone. At the dance he became acquainted with two young ladies from Moera and volunteered to take them home, which he proceeded to do about midnight. According to the police statement given when he appeared in Court at Petone yesterday, and which he did not deny, he drove, at a high speed along Jackson Street and struck a stationary truck, damaging the rental car to the extent of £80 and the truck to the extent of £20. He drove on and turned into a side street, where his passengers, one of whom had been injured, left the car. Moulder, without ascertaining the injuries sustained by his passenger, proceeded further and abandoned the car. The charges, to which he pleaded guilty, were driving in a dangerous manner and failing to notify the police of the accident. He was fined £5 on the first charge and £2 on the second by Mr. A. E. Dobbie, S.M. Senior-Sergeant T. Campagnola prosecuted.
