CANADIAN REINFORCEMENTS OTTAWA. December 4. Mr. Ralph Maybank (Liberal) told the House of Commons that a crisis regarding Canadian Army reinforcements was inevitable, because infan- j try casualties were 5000 a month, instead of 2500 as was expected. Mr. Maybank did not indicate \vhether the figures were only for the Canadians on the western European front or included the Mediterranean front. - Canadian headquarters announced that casualties for June and July were 11,550, for August 9338, for September 8445, and for October 7921.

First shots in the bombardment preliminary to the American landing on Morotai (Moluccas) were fired by H.M.A.S. Warramunga. Her sister ship the Arunta and H.M.A. cruisers Australia and Shropshire were in the action, too. and two crack Australian coasters, Manoora and Kanimbla, carried troops. The? Shropshire's were, among.the largest guns to open up. She sent shells into the target area at the rate of almost a ton a minute.' On •the Australia there was a running commentary over the loud speaker system.
