JUBILEE YEAR

WELLINGTON SWIMMING

CLUB

As this was the jubilee year of the club, it was fitting to call to mind, said Mr. A. Jenkins' (a vice-president) at the annual meeting of the Wellington Amateur Swimming Club, that an early member of the club was today, the commander of the 2nd N.Z.E.F. in Italy (Lt.-Gen. Sir Bernard Freyberg). It was believed by the speaker (who presided in the absence of the president, JVIr. D. S. N. McCartney) that Wellington was the first swimming club in the Dominion to complete 50 years of activity. - Though the war had reduced the senior membership to almost nil, it was hard to find anything in the fiftieth annual report that did not speak of keenness and a job well done. The club was to be congratulated upon the marked success it had had in the past season.

The learn-to-swim classes, the dispatch of reports and parcels to members overseas, the financial position, and the performances of teams and individual swimmers in the competitive field were mentioned as matters giving cause for much satisfaction. Since the last annual meeting three more club members had lost their lives on active service, and members stood in silence as a mark of respect.

The jubilee committee's effort to raise funds necessary to celebrate the occasion was organised by Mr. E. F. Casey, and the result to date was very satisfactory. It was hoped that approval would be given the committee's suggestion that a jubilee magazine -be compiled, and the main celebrations be postponed until after the war, when many members now overseas would be able to participate.

Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows: President, Mr. D. S. N. McCartney; vice-presidents, the mayor (Mr. W. Appleton), Dr. F. Clark, Capt. H. G. Hatchwell, and Messrs. K. Luke, J. F. B. Stevenson, B. Sutherland, P. F. Coira, F. Desmond, A. A. Jenkins, J. Smith, A. G. Smith, E. F. Casey, and A, Fletcher; club captain, Mr. A. Amies; ladies' captain, Miss B.
