MARKING OF CLOTHING
MANUFACTURING SOURCE
In an announcement today, the Acting Minister of Supply and Munitions (Mr. Nash) referred to the gazetting of a control order relating to the marking of clothing. The Marking of Clothing Control Order which was gazetted last week is confined at present to underclothing, shirts, and pyjamas, and requires that from February 19 next each garment of these classes which is produced shall be labelled either with the name of the manufacturer concerned or with his registered trade mark.
For some time past many New Zealand manufacturers who have been producing garments of good quality have been somewhat concerned over quantities of underclothing not up to standard and without brands or marks indicating the source of manufacture, which have been placed on the market.
The Government has also been concerned with the position, as under rationing and stabilisation it is desirable that the clothing which is available to the people should be of reasonable quality so that it will give lasting and good service.
Discussions have been held between manufacturers and the Government, and as a result it was decided to bring down the control order. It is felt that the requ.\ement of the order will have a restrictive effect on the production of clothing of inferior quality, as compliance with the order is compulsory for all manufacturers concerned and will enable the source of manufacture to be traced.
