BLEDISLOE MEDAL
AWARDED TO W. MCCASKfLL P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, This Day. This year's award of the Bledisloe Medal has been made to Mr. Lancelot William McCaskill, of Christchurch. The medal is given annually to a former student of the Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln, who, in the words of the conditions laid down by the donor, Viscount Bledisloe, "in the opinion of the governors of the college has as a result of his training at the college materially assisted farming in New Zealand or has advanced the country's interests." Mi-. McCaskill has for more than 20 years been associated with the rural life of the Dominion, having taught agriculture and allied subjects at schools in Auckland, Taranaki, Wanganui; Westland, Canterbury, and Southland. He was a student at the Canterbury Agricultural College from 1919 to 1920, and holds a diploma in agricultural science from the college. He graduated B.Ag. from the Canterbury University College in 1923, and in 1929, while a student a Otago University, graduated M.Ag. with first-class honours in agricultural economics. From 1928 to 1933 he was lecturer in ■agriculture and biology at the Dunedin Teachers' Training College, and since 1936 he has held a similar appointment at the Christchurch! Teachers' Training College. Recently he was appointed to the newly-created lectureship in Rural Education at the Canterbury Agricultural College. In 1939 Mr. McCaskill was awarded a Carnegie travelling scholarship to enable him to study rural education and soil conservation in Canada, the United States, and Great Britain. In May, 1944, he was elected to the newlyconstituted North Canterbury Catchment Board. •
