WATERSIDER'S CLAIM HEARD

Liability for damages being admitted,, a jury in the Supreme Court was asked today to assess the amount, in an action brought by William Haines, aged 54, waterside worker, against the Union Steamship Co., Ltd. Mr. Justice Johnston was on the Bench, Mr. F. W. Ongley appeared for the plaintiff and Mr. C. G. White and Mr. D. Virtue for the defendant.

Mr. Ongley said that in January last the plaintiff was engaged in putting away a doubling wire, and owing to its being insecurely fixed the wire fell and struck him across the shoulders and the back of the neck. He had not been able to work since he came out of-hospital, and at one time it was questionable whether he would ever work again. However, as a result of further hospital treatment his prospects of working improved, though it would be at least six months before he could hope to work. Even then it was not expected that he would do the work in which he was previously engaged, (Proceeding.)
