FAMOUS COMMANDERS

LONDON, October 16.

Admiral Nimitz has disclosed the names of the commanding officers of the Third .Fleet off Formosa. ViceAdmiral W. A. Lee, jun., is second in command to Admiral Halsey. ViceAdmiral Marc Mitscher commands the entire fast carrier task force.

Carrier units are commanded by

Vice-Admiral J. S. McCain and RearAdmirals F. Sherman, R. E. Davison, G. F. Bogan, and H. B. Sallad. •

This list includes the names of some of the most famoxis naval commanders of the Pacific War. Vice-Admiral W. A. Lee, jun. ("Ching Chong" Lee) commanded the big new U.S. battle-

ships Washington and South Dakota at the night battle oft' the Solomons in mid-November, 1942, after which the position in the southern Solomons was never again seriously threatened by the Japanese. .Vice-Admiral McCain formerly commanded the aircraft in the South Pacific. Rear-Admiral Sherman was formerly Assistant Chief of Staff to Admiral Nimitz and won the Navy Cross for his work in the Solomons. Vice-Admiral Mitscher, a former Assistant Chief of the Naval Bureau of Aeronautics, commanded the task forces which paved the way for the assault on the Marianas and the Palau Islands. Rear-Admiral Sherman's force was prominent in the Marshalls operations.
