ATTACK BY TANKS

RUGBY, October 15. "A dramatic moment in the recent fighting near Tiddim was the sudden appearance of British tanks on the crest of the famous 'Chocolate Staircase' on the way to the Japanese stronghold in the Chin Hills," writes a Burma correspondent. "To get into position the tanks crept before dawn from their harbour hidden at the foot of the Staircase. They wound up a series of 'hairpin bends through cloud to emerge on the crest at a height of SSOO feet in bright sunshine and ready for an attack on the stubborn enemy. In their advance, the noise of their t;ngines -was masked by Hurricane fighter-bombers roaring over to bomb and machine-gun Japanese positions." —8.0. W. .
