MAKING ALUMINIUM
AUSTRALIAN CHARGES
(Special P.A. Correspondent.)
SYDNEY, October 16. The international aluminium cartel has begun underground moves to prevent the establishment of the aluminium industry in Tasmania, according to the political correspondent of the journalists' newspaper, the "News." The correspondent says that recent moves and also the allegations that th<» cartel's latest price rise to the Australian Government is without justification, are being investigated. Though the Commonwealth Government had received an official estimate from Canada that aluminium can be produced at six cents a lb, the cartel has just added another four cents to the price. "It is officially stated that in spite of the cartel's opposition the Commonwealth is determined to persevere with the establishment of the Tasmanian industry," writes the correspondent. "Threats already have been made that the validity of the Commonwealth engaging in the industry will be challenged in the High Court." The Federal Government three weeks ago passed a Bill authorising the establishment of an aluminium industry at a cost of £3,000,000. Some experts claim, however, that the cost involved will exceed £7,000,000. Control of the world's aluminium supplies has been mainly in the hands of Alliance Aluminium, Limited, with its headquarters at Arvida, Canada.'
