POLICE CONFERENCE DISCUSSION OF REMITS
The ninth' annual conference of the New Zealand Police Association, which represents the Police Force other than commissioned officers, is at present being held in Wellington, Mr. G. J. Paine, of Wellington; presiding over delegates from all police districts throughout New Zealand. The conference was opened on Wednesday by. the Minister in Charge ■■ of Police (Mr. Fraser), who was accompanied by the Hon. P. C. Webb, and the Commissioner of Police, Mr. D.. J. Cummings In his address to the conference Mr. Fraser referred to the functions of the Police Association and showed how they differed not only, from those of a trade union but also from other public service organisations. He referred to the excellent, work that had been carried out by the force during the war period, and through the delegates | thanked all members for their loyal I co-operation. , ;
Mr. Fraser also referred to . the pending retirement of the Commissioner of Police, after a service in the force of over 45 years. He made appreciative reference to the loyal services rendered to the country by Mr. Cummings. .
. Mr. Fraser's remarks were endorsed by Mr: Webb. , \
Mr. Cummings also addressed the conference, mentioning the progress made, during his term of office. A large building programme was ahead and he looked forward to a great improvement in the amenities of -the men. •:■'■■ .
Before the commencement of the work of the conference .the following resolution was carried:—"That this conference records its admiration of the efforts, being made by the Allies to bring the war to a speedy conclusion, extends its sympathy to.all those members who have suffered bereavements as a result of the war, and reaffirms the determination of all members of the association to play their part in the common cause." : ' The conference passed a further resolution pledging its loyalty to the Government and looking forward to the carrying on of its objects in a spirit of co-operation and goodwill. The delegates present expressed their appreciation of the humanitarianism shown by the Commissioner during his term of office and wished him well on his retirement.
The conference proceeded to discuss a number of important remits affecting pay and conditions. Later delegates will wait on the Prime Minister to place their views before him.
