Except that the weather was bleak, horses with engagements at Otaki were, given their final gallops under really good conditions at1 Awapuni, the going being comparatively fast. The flags, however, were over 40ft out. Don Quex (A. G. Waddell) worked over a mile with the pace easy over ■the- first three furlongs. He ran the last five furlongs in 1.10 to complete the full distance in 1.57 1-5. Classform went twice round, each time being speeded up,for the run home. She finished strongly, in each instance. ■■■-*■ Alchemy (J. Kendall) and Hakim (M. Taylor) . were companions over a mile, which they ran comfortably in 1.51. the. last three furlongs in 40 3-5 sec. Jonathan Jo (W. J. Broughton) and Sunblaze (W. E. Carter) sprinted five furlongs in 1.8 .without being under pressure at any stage. Both finished nicely. Sir Bradbury (W. J. Rout) and Gardane (Taylor) galloped seven furlongs m 1.37 4-5, time which was equalled by Royal Scholar (J. P Bowness), who beat Drake's Drum' (W. Rout) by a couple of lengths. Among the earlier workers were i! lying Ace . (Jenkins) seven in 1 37: Our Pat and Mary Jo, four in 54sec; and Dancing Water (Clarke), three in 45sec. Gold Bridge (A. worked over a mile in 1.59 3-5, covering the last three furlongs in 42 3-5 sec. . ■ OVER THE SCHOOLING HURDLES. There was a good deal of jumping, and except that Kinsman dipped and lost his rider at one fence, the exhibitions were first-class. Lightfair (Bowry) and Greek Effort (N. Howard) gave a fine display over four flights. Anglo-Irish (C. Gill) was keen to go in a round with Cuisinier (Howard) and- Kinsman (E.; Baker). Gay Flame (Miss Freda White) never put a foot wrongly over a round. Whero (Miss White) gave sone of his best exhibitions over four flights. Fox Cover (Fagan) jumped three flights and went welll. Signal Light (E. Temperton), Aristocrat (Ireland), and Po-, Huka (Jenkins) went well over four hurdles. Monmouth (Stevens) was given his first jumping since Christchurch.
