VALUE OF SULFADIAZINE
Rec. 10 a.m. NEW YORK, October 3. Naval officers have informed the American Public Health Association that 79 to 90 per cent, of the winter's common respiratory diseases have been prevented in more than 600,000 members of the services by a small daily dose of srulfadiazine. All streptococcus infections have been reduced by about 85 per cent. Meningitis has been wiped out in some camps and it has been reduced almost to zero everywhere. Rheumatic fever and pneumonia have dropped markedly The officers reported that the common cold and other respiratory infections have also strikingly decreased but they are puzzled about this and not sure whether the reduction in colds is due to the sulfa drug, because colds are supposed to be caused by virus and sulfa does not affect virus.
