MANNERS STREET TRACKS
Good progress is being made by the two gangs of permanent way men in relaying the Manners Street tram tracks, in the course of which a bend in the line, opposite the end of Bond Street, will be eased, to give better clearance on the south side of Manners Street. These tracks have not been down so very long, dating from 1920 and 1922, but they have carried exceptionally heavy traffic; in some lengths the concrete foundation has failed rather badly, but on the whole the work has opened up better than was expected, a "Post" reporter was told today. Willis Street will follow, and there, because of the seepage, and surface drainage troubles which have bothered the department for some years, and the different form of construction, the foundations will probably be found in worse shape. The renewal of tracks in Manners and Wiliis Streets will just about clean up the main lines through the city, with the exception of a short length at the northern end of Lambton Quay, near the Court buildings.
There is a ready sale for the old rails.. Some are used for special strengthening work, a few build farmers' wharves and jetties in the Marlborough Sounds and thereabouts, and larger lots go underground as pit props
