GOOD PROGRESS

DRIVE TO PO VALLEY

RESISTANCE STILL STIFF

(By Telesraph—Press Association—Copyright.) Rec. 10.30 a.m. LONDON; October 4 British and American troops of the Fifth Army continue, despite stiff resistance, to make good progress in the drive towards the Po Valley, says today's Allied communique. Bad weather on the Eighth Army front prevented large-scale operations. American troops of the Fifth Army after the capture of Monghidoro, maintained the advance and are now less than 16 miles from Bologna, says the Exchange Telegraph agency's Rome correspondent. Other Fifth Army forces, who are also advancing towards Bologna, captured Gampeggio north-east of Monghidoro and gained another 1000 yards beyond the town. British troops with the Fifth Army in the mountains on the extreme right flank improved their position between Monte Fuso and Monte Alto. No further enemy counter-attacks have been launched against Monte Battaglia, the scene of the recent furious fighting. The Germans in the central sector continue to resist, but Fifth Army troops wrested San Benedetto, San Andrea, and Monte del Galletto from them Berlin radio reports that the enemy launched an attack on a broad front north of Firenzuola, but that the Germans sealed off the breaches made.
