WAR CONTRIBUTIONS

BROADCASTING SERVICE

An emphatic denial that he had given any instructions that employees of the broadcasting service should be asked to disclose their individual war and national savings contributions was made by the Minister in Charge of Broadcasting (Mr. Jones) in the House of Representatives yesterday when replying to a notice of question from Mr. W. H. Gillespie (National, Hurunui).

The Minister said that as far as he personally was concerned he had not given any instructions that the members of the broadcasting service should supply returns as to the extent of their contributions to the Victory Loan or any other loan. If any circular had been. issued to that effect it had certainly not been under his instructions. "I certainly will make inquiries as to whether such a thing is taking place," added the Minister. In a note to his question Mr. Gillespie said that the circular that had been issued stated that "the honourable the Minister has requested that a return be furnished disclosing the total contributions from the Department to the War Loan." Employees were asked to volunteer certain information, : which would be treated confidentially, to the accountant. Mr Gillespie added that the staff felt that their investments were their private concern.
