POSITION OF BULLER

P.A. WESTPORT, This Day. Although Buller was short of its Victory Loan objective of £121,300 by £7736, the impression prevails here that the district has done well in view of the fact that except for the Westport Coal Company, £1500, and the Union Steam Ship Company, £1000, businesses that have their headquarters elsewhere but are operating here on a large scale, did not contribute. Further, it is pointed out that there is no harbour board in Westport, the State having taken over the board many years ago, together with the rich revenues from the harbour endowments, which included 6d a ton on the early coal mines and Is a ton on the later mines. Now that Stockton has been converted into a State mine its royalties would also go to the State.
