DAIRY OUTPUT
SUBSTANTIAL INCREASE
O.C. AUCKLAND, This Day. Satisfaction at the substantial increase in production to date this season in comparison with the figures for the corresponding period last year was expressed yesterday by Mr. C. J. Parlane, general manager bi the New Zealand Co-operative Dairy Co., Ltd. He added that the position was particularly, pleasing in view of the increased demand for dairy products by the United Kingdom. The settlement which . had been reached between the Government and the industry with regard to the price of : butterfat, he said, should be considered as reasonably satisfactory by all concerned and should give encouragement to dairy farmers to continue to do their utmpst to bring about an increase in production. A great difficulty- was the shortage of farm and factory labour, Mr. Parlane continued. He thought it was possible that still more men could be released from the Forces in order to fill vacancies in essential industries without impairing the efficiency of the military machine. After the war the dairy producer would have to meet keen competition from the manufacturers of margarine, which could be produced at a considerably lower price than butter. .
If his. information, was correct; he added, the dairy herds of Denmark had not been seriously impaired as a result of the war, and it might not be long before competition from this source again existed; It was therefore of importance that every effort should be made to improve the quality of New Zealand Butter.
