JET-PROPELLED PLANES

Rec 10.45 a.m. RUGBY, October 2. The growing significance of jet-pro-pelled aircraft is reflected in the announcement that the council of the Royal Aeronautical Society has awarded Air Commodore Frank Whittle its gold medal for work in tms connection.

Air correspondents draw attention, to the ever greater frequency with which the newest German, aircraft—a jet-pro-pelled, twin-engined Me.262 known as the Swallow-r-is being encountered over Holland and north-west Germany. The Swallow has yet to shoot down a British or American fighter, but it is obvious that the Luftwaffe also attaches great importance to jet propulsion. It is considered that when more experience has been gained'the Me.262 may prove a formidable opponent, since it is understood to travel at almost the speed of sound (over 769 miles an hour). The Swallow at present suffers from lack of manoeuvrability,--B.Q.W.
