BLUNDELL CLOCK

QUESTION OF TABLET

~ The question- of the erection^ of a suitable tablet commemorating itKe gift of a clock to the city by t&eyiSfe Mr. John Blundell was raised! oat -a meeting of the Wellington: City Council yesterday afternoon, -when the Mayor (Mr. 'Appleton^said that the Wellington Fire Board' had advised that it was not.,ag£eeable to a tablet being placed outside the fire station, in the towerj.jpf which the clock was rehoused after the demolition of the .Tpwii Hall tower. The Fire Board had Reversed its previous, decision, however, and intended to erect* a tablet inside the building on the ground floor.

Councillor W. J; Gaudin said that the room in which dt was proposed to erect the tablet was a fine one. He had opposed the decision, but did not know that the council could do anything about it. •

The Mayor: I cannot see why they should hot put a suitable tablet outside the building.

Councillor R. A. Wright said, that the board's attitude was difficult to understand. He could not see what difference it would make to the board to place a suitable memorial on the outside of the building. He thought that they should have a tablet to the effect that the clock was a present by the late Mr. John Blundell. It was a magnificent gift, and it was expected at the time that it- should go on to the Town Hall. He thought no reasonable citizen would defend the Fire Board in its action.

Wellington was almost unique in the paucity of public gifts of this character, said Councillor M. Fraser, and recognition should be given them. He thought a deputation from the council should wait oh the board in connection with the matter. .

This was agreed to and the Mayor and Councillors Wright and Macalister were appointed a deputation.
