VISITOR'S ELOQUENT PLEA

In response to the invitation'of the Mayor and Mayoress of Auckland, Mr and Mrs. J. A. C./Allum, a large and representative gathering assembled for afternoon tea in the council chamber of the Town Hall recently ir honour of Mrs. Archibald Silverman of Providence, Rhode Island, U.S.A. representative of the Jewish Agenc.V for Palestine. ■ , The Mayor, ;in ' welcoming the visitor, stressed the deyotion .to hei race which had driven Mrs. Silverman, herself a mother and a'grandmother, to leave her home anc family and travel thousands of milet on difficult and often dangerous journeys to every corner of the earth tc plead the cause of the Jewish people "There can never be peace on earth until the problem of the Jew it; solved," said Mrs. Silverman, addressing the gathering. With a simplicity and sincerity which carried their own appeal, she made an eloquent plea for the support of the cause she represented, emphasising; the desperate need of her people for a.national home of their own, especially after .the war. Already the Jews, had worked miracles in Palestine, creating fruitfulness and beauty put of sand and swamp and barren land, yet constantly Jewish refugees, pitiful remnants escaped from. . enemy.-occ.upied countries, asked- hfer where^hey' were to go after-the ..war,:.-since:'the- cry; ~so often is, "We don't! want you!" In spite of- this, said'-Mrs^'Silverman. 300 war industries, working 24. hours a day and sending war •• requirements even to the armies in/Russia, had-been started with Jewish money, and 40,000 Jewish men-■•coming-.out'of Palestine to fight, asked'only the right to wear the badge of David om their" arms. The "forgotten ally" of .the .United Nations, now a homeless people, -asked for a home of their 'own and a share in' that justice to all -mankind for which all were fighting.
