RADIO SERIALS

Sir,,—ln. replying to statements made by Lloyd Lamble (in an interview reported in "The Post" on Monday, September 25): the. correspondent signing himself Howard C Brown overlooked certain important points. I would point out that while Mr. Lamble did refer. to the' "dumping in this country of American radio features" which your correspondent showed to «c less evident than Australian productions, the point which Mr. Lamble obviously desired .to make was that New Zealand has both the talent and the facilities to produce excellent radio serials in her own studios. Lloyd Lamble (who is a. leading radio and stage actor in Australia, and should be qualified to compare), pointed out that New Zealand artists are shockingly underpaid. I should also point out that the broadcasting service adopts an extremely short-sighted policy in producing radio plays, ft has on its staff several outstanding actors of proven radio' ability, whose services are not utilised because they are employed by the same broadcasting service. There can 'be no doubt that little or no attempt has been made to find the real talent which this country possesses and what little' has been used has been poorly exploited ?i nd i-^ bbA ly underpald. I appreciate tne difficulties faced by the production department of the broadcasting service in. the wartime shortage of recording blanks, the shortage of expert technicians, and the impossibility of acquiring: new, quality recording equipment, but no excuse can be .offered for the failure to adequately utilise the technical and human material at hand Some work has been done which compares favourably with recordings made by world-famous studios, and it can be done again.—l am, etc., ■.■:.- ANOUN.
