HARRIER RACES

CLOSE CALL FOR GEDDES

The annual 'harrier races for the Bennett Memorial Shield (senior) and the Craig Cup (junior) were run in Wellington on Saturday, with the Star Boating Club's sheds as the starting point. The 7 1/ 2 -mi!e senior event was won by A. R. Geddes (Scottish), the provincial champion, but he had little to spare from A. Barclay, the young Brooklyn runner. Scottish won the teams event by a big margin from Brooklyn. The three-mile junior race was won by R. Hammington (Hutt Valley), with a dead heat for second. Scottish were again successful in the teams race.

Mr. M. R. Watterson, chairman of the Wellington Athletic Centre, presented the Bennett Memorial Shield to the Scottish senior team and Mr. N. Craig the Craig Cup to the junior team. Results were:—

Owens (Wellington), 6. Junior.—R. Hammington (Hutt Valley), 17 mm 37sec, 1; A. Pay (Scottish) and D. Newton (Scottish), 2; M. W. Smith (Hutt Valley), 4; B. Bulman (Brooklyn), 5. Team Placings.—Senior: Scottish, 13 points, 1; Brooklyn, 45 points, 2; Hutt Valley, 46 points, 3. Junior: Scottish, 11 points, 1 ; Hutt Valley, -21 points, 2; Brooklyn, 30 points.

SOCCER AT CHRISTCHURCH P-A. CHRISTCHURCH, October 1. In a hard game lacking in finish Thistle drew with Railways Association football team from Hutt, Wellington, at English Park. The score was two goals each. The pace was on ail the time and keen, hard Soccer was seen.
