CHESS
N.Z. CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP
Very satisfactory .progress was made on Saturday night in the 2Q-a-side telegraphic match between the Canterbury and Wellington Chess Clubs. When play ceased at 11 p.m., eight games had been accounted for, as follows, Wellington players named first: —A. W. Gyles beat R. W. Smith, J. D. Steele beat M. Stewart, K. Beyer drew with Mrs. Abbott, F. K. Kelling lost to er, Lovell-Smith, W. J. Fairburn beat Rev. C. Flood, R. A. Godtsehalk drew with S. Hollander, F. Vincent lost to Miss A. King, and N. S, .Henderson lost :to-G.- G: Parkins. Mr, Steele again handled an Evans Gambit attack with admirable precision. The score is thus 4-4 at present. The .positions reached in the 12 unfinished games are being examined in both centres. A I cursory glance over them gives the impression that an exceptionally close finish may . lie looked for when the final figures are available. Any positions upon which the two jcaptains cannot reach agreement are to be submitted to the Dunedin members of the New Zealand Adjudication Board for decision.
