JURY FEES

HIGHER REMUNERATION

A plea for higher pay for jurors was made in the House of Representatives yesterday-by Mr. J. T. Watts (National, Riccarton), during consideration of the Estimates of the Department of Justice and Prisons. Mr Watts said that many jurors had expressed the opinion to him that the pay they received for their services was not sufficient to reimburse them for the time lost at their employment, ahe same thing applied to witnesses'

Mr. H. E. Combs (Government, Wellington Suburbs) supported Mr. Watts in his plea for higher jury fees, contending that a juror should not be out of pocket for giving his services. He suggested particularly that higher fees should apply to members of special juries. The question of increased jurors' tees was under consideration, said the Minister -of Justice (Mr.. Mason) He understood the matter was. at present before the Stabilisation Commission lhe proposal was to increase the fee' and if service as a juror was continuous for more than three days, which rarely happened, then the question of lull reimbursement might be raised lhat was the idea he was working on at the present time. •
