RADIO HOURS
SUMMER MONTHS
TWO SILENT PERIODS
The periods of silence in broadcasting, to operate from Monday until further notice on Mondays to Fridays inclusive, will be from 11.30 a.m. to 12 noon and from 5.15 p.m. to 5.45 p.m. This was announced today in a joint statement issued by the Minister of Supply and Munitions (Mr. Sullivan) and the Minister of Broadcasting (Mr. Jones). The Ministers said the reductions amounting to two hours daily from Mondays to Fridays during three peak electricity periods covered the winter period up to the end of September During the last summer months a half-hour reduction was enforced from 5.15 p.m. to 5.45 p.m., but in view of the continued seriousness of the electricity-supply position, it had been considered desirable to have the two half-hour breaks in broadcasting throughout the coming summer months.
"The need for economising in the use ,of electricity must continue to be emphasised. Although the consumption of electricity is lighter during the summer months generally it is necessary to husband as much of our coal stocks and water storage as possible in preparation for meeting the demands for the next winter period."
