SERIOUS POSITION

SOUTH CHINA CAMPAIGN

Rec. 2 p.m. CHUNGKING, Sept. 18. The Japanese forces advancing towards Kweilin not only threaten to cut China into two, but may wreck the entire American establishment in China, says the Associated Press. Japanese columns are swinging into position to secure the line from Manchuria to the China Sea, and only a gap of 110 miles, betwen Yungming, seventy miles east of Kweilin, and Waitsap, 85 miles north of Canton, remains to be closed. The Japanese force which captured Yungming is reported to be within 50 miles of Kweilin. Another enemy force from Canton has seized Waitsap. A Chinese communique claimed the recapture of Lishui,' in Chekiang Province, and said that Chinese forces had penetrated Wenchow, temporarily frustrating the Japanese attempt to gain control of the Wu River.
