STREET LIGHTING COSTS

The Town Clerk, Mr. H. Firth, advised the Petone Borough Council last evening that the borough would benefit to the extent of £125 a year by the reduction in the cost of street lighting supplied by the Hutt Valley Electric Power Board.

Councillor K. London said he was disappointed the reduction was so small. Bodies who controlled monopolies, as did the Power Board, got the idea they were above other bodies and could do as they liked, forgetting what they owed to the ratepayers, who were the guarantors of the concern. Seeing what the Power Board owed to the ratepayers, it was not too much to ask that street lighting should be free.

Another councillor inquired why no reduction was given on suspension' lights, to which, the Mayor, Mr. H. Green, replied that the present wartime suspension lamps would not stand up to wind strain and were eiftirery unprofitable to the Power Board.
