REPRIEVE

Ambushed by the Japs in Dutch New Guinea, a party of Americans had to retire. One, with a shattered leg dragged/himself into the jungle, but soon he saw a sixfoot Japanese marine advancing on him, with gun at the ready. "No gun," called the American. The marine advanced and stood over him. "Have you a spare cigarette?" ■' he asked. He was given one and sat down to smoke it. "I lived for years, in California." he said. "I was educated there. I don't want to fight" "Stay with me and surrender," said the American. But the Jap refused and ■■ wandered off. Stretcher-bearers were carrying the American back when there was a burst of machinegun fire The gun team told the wounded man that they had got seven Japs. Among them was a six-foot marine.
