"FLYING DUSTBIN"
NEW BRITISH WEAPON
Rec. 1 p.m. RUGBY, September 18. Many devices, some of which are still secret, have been developed to assist in breaching the German defences- in western Europe. By no means all of them have yet been employed against the enemy. The initial breach on the coastal defences at the outset of the invasion was largely due to a special "armoured vehicle, Royal Engineers" (AVRE). It is generally similar to a Churchill tank, but the interior is . specially designed to accommodate the crew of engineers, and to carry specially safeguarded explosive charges for use in demolitions. The AVRE is able to hurl a charge containing many times the weight of explosive in any other known projectile of similar dimensions, against concrete or masonry obstacles. This bomb has been nicknamed the "flying dustbin."—BO.W.
