A large and perfect example of the short stone Maori club known as Patu Onewa has been added to. the loan exhibit of Maori adzes at present showing at Reef ton. This club corresponds to the Maori mere, which is the same type of club worked in greenstone, states the ethnologist at the Canterbury Museum (Mr. R. S. Duff). This specimen was found at Rotomanu, which is inland from Greymouth by Mr. John Ryan, who was ploughing on his property when the share brought up the perfect club, as well as the butt and blade portions of either one or two more. This type of club is very rare in the South Island, although broken, ones are not uncommon round the Goose Bay area of Kaikoura. "This club is almost certainly a form introduced within the last 200 or 300 years from the North Island, said Mr. Duff Mr. Ryan's specimen is probably as large and as perfectly formed as any in New Zealand museums. During October the club will be displayed in Westport with approximately 40 stone adzes, all from Westland. The exhibit will then be displayed for some time at the Canterbury Museum.
