NAVAL DEMONSTRATION

Hundreds of people lined the Clyde Quay Wharf at lunch-time today to watch the special display given by naval units as part of "Salute the Sailor" week. Three of the fast harbour defence motor launches took part, and 'the public saw them in action at speed. Following a sea rescue demonstration by one of the ships, the victim, a dummy dropped by parachute, the three • showed their paces in some smart exercises, with the crews at action stations. Another spectacular effort was the dropping of depth charges against a hypothetical submarine, a manoeuvre performed where the Clyde Quay spectators got a good view of it —much better, in fact, than the view obtained by the large numbers who manned the city's tall buildings. What the depth charges did to the fish in the vicinity was not hard to guess, for almost every seagull around the waterfront flocked to the spot for easy prey. While this was going on, other citizens were being entertained by the Ford Motor Company concert party at Victory Corner. The Victory Loan Committee has' secured the services of the Kiwi Concert Party which . arrives in Wellington tomorrow, and will appear at the victory rally at Victory Corner at 12.15. There will also be a victory rally at Unity Corner from noon until 2 o'clock. An excellent programme of entertainment has been arranged. The Navy will give the public an opportunity of seeing a naval training

school m action. Bonds bought this week at the Navy stall at Kirkcaldie and Stains carry with them a ticket of admission to this exciting model demonstration. Visitors will be permitted to fire the guns against the attacking dive bombers and U-boats. This display, hitherto a naval secret, is open to the public for the first time.
