O.C. . SYDNEY, August 16. A banquet table to seat 50 is being made in Sydney for the Duke and; Duchess of Gloucester. It will be sent; to Government House, Canberra, where the Duke will reside when he succeeds; Lord Gowrie as Governor-General of Australia. The table, which is being: made in eight sections, will be 48f£ long. The oresent dining table at Government House, can seat only 25 guests.' There have been occasions when vicer regal officials have been at their wits end to find room for the increasing number of foreign diplomats at Canberra, in addition to Federal Cabinet Ministers and their wives. Thirtyeight places would have to be reserved at the table for Cabinet Ministers and their wives alone if they all attended. Foreign diplomats with Ministerial rank take precedence after the Prime Minister at all official functions; and the High Commissioners of Britain and the Dominions come next, then the Australian Ministers. Additions and alterations to Government House itself to accommodate the Duke's staff will not be extensive.
shadow of cultural development, we " have dropped the meat of exact knowledge. Boys and girls facing secondary or university education are often in a state of mental muddlement that - breeds inferiority complexes and a dislike of the very subjects in which we wish to encourage them. The remedy? There is no prescription but the good old-fashioned one of ' hard work and strict adherence to routine. Some at least of our lost exam- ' - inations should be restored, and many " lectures,-picture shows, exhibitions, ' " and outings given up. The reward of some drudgery will be a surer foun- ' dation on which the pupils themselves r will be able to build their own cdi- *' nee of culture as taste and opportunity "-•' may direct.—l am, etc., " EDITH L.
