RIGHTS OF HUMANITY

BROAD9AST BY THE POPE

(By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright.) Rec. noon. -LONDON, September 1. An appeal for post-war reconstruction on the basis of Christian principles was made by the Pope in a broadcast to the world from the Vatican. He declared that Christians must be ready to work together for the salvation of man and the creation of anew world from the ruins. The fundamental rights of all peoples must ne upheld. Christian civilisation must be the foundation of all social life and morality for all members of the human family.% "There must be an.elevation of the prolejariat, because this is dne-of the moral principles of Christianity," he said. "The Church has .always recog-; nised private property, but it is true"; that private property is the fruit^ of man's work. The Church cannot recognise in private property a false conception such as • capitalism. Property has not unlimited right." The Pope' declared that social policy, in future must' protect personal property, aiid encourage and guarantee small and medium property in .agriculture, industry, and commerce. "Private property must not overshadow general property, but -must be part of it." ; After declaring that property has not unlimited right, the Pope, commented: We will always see an ever-increasing mass of workers who succeed in evading their social duties. On the one' hand, we see an innumerable multitude of those who have nothing; on the; other hand. we ; see huge wealth concen-! trated. Those who have nothing will do anything for those who promise" them bread and a pittance. -
