EXTENSIVE RAIDS
- SYDNEY, September 1. A Japanese destroyer and four merchant vessels were destroyed or seriously damaged in the northern Celebes by United States Navy Cataiina flyingboats on Tuesday night. One Cataiina probably sank two tankers in Manado Bay and later scored direct hits on a destroyer in Lembah Strait. A second Cataiina sank two 1000-ton freighters at Manado. In the past fortnight Allied planes have sunk or severely damaged 18 large ships at this important Japanese transhipping centre. General Mac Arthur's communique today also reports a raid by Liberators on Davao, in the southern Philippines, on Tuesday night, while 600 miles to the west other Liberators in daylight on Wednesday dropped more than 70 tons of bombs on Palau, in the western Carolines. Heavy damage to harbour installations is claimed.
