UNDER A HANDICAP

TRAINERS AT TRENTHAIV!

Although it was the intention of several Trentham trainers to be repreI sented at the Wangariui Meeting it is very problematical whether any of them will be able:to go through with their programmes. Positioned as it is, the local training centre is at a'disadvantage under the conditions that prevail. Overtures for the transport of horses by goods train to V^angariui have to date been profitless, and so far as road transport is concerned, at least 90 miles' walking would be entailed in getting to Wanganui. Experience has shown that walking racehorses on. the bitumen' roads entails a loss of form. Under the prevailing conditions racing clubs might express their sympathy with trainers afield by remitting nomination and acceptance fees where transport difficulties prevent the fulfilment N, of engagements. Trentham trainers are of the opinion that, in view of the huge sums it receives through racing • taxation, .the Government should extend more .consideration to those whose livelihood is dependent on the sport. - ■ Heavy Tracks.—Another handicap Trentham' trainers are at present facing is that in respect to tracks. The lengthy spell of indifferent weather experienced up the Valley has not-as-sisted in the preparation of horses for the spring racing, and the indications are that the big majority will be backward for the early meetings.
