MAGISTRATE'S COURT
A Hindu labourer, Nathu Jaggivan, 24, admitted in the Magistrate's Court yesterday the theft of an oilskin coat, valued at £4 15s, from the Railway btation, where he had been employed as a cleaner. It was stated on his behalf that he had a previously clean record, and his father, who lived in Wellington, was prepared to look after him. Mr. J. L. Stout, S.M., admitted him to probation for 12 months, conditions being that he remain with his father and make immediate restitution.
William Charles Kidd, factory hand, 19, admitted the theft of a cigarette case, valued at 2oj, from the basement of the V.M.C.A. It was stated that he had been admitted to • probation for two years in June last for other thefts from the V.M.C.A. The Magistrate decided to give him another chance and ordered him to come up for sentence within 12 months if called upon. Donald Miller Robertson, factory hand, 32, went to the Railway Station to collect a bag he had left there, but was given another suitcase and laundry by mistake, said DetectiveSergeant Thompson. He kept them and returned later and collected his own bag, saying he had lost his checks. He sold. some of the goods which were of a total value of £10 18s, and gave others away. Robertson admitted the charge, and also a- charge of stealing a suit, valued at £6, from a house where he had been staying. He sold :t for 15s. It had not been recovered. He was sentenced to two months' imprisonment on each charge, the sentences to be cumulative. W. R. McGrath, Ltd., were fined £3 and costs for employing Alfred Edward Wyatt, painter, without the permission of the Man-power Officer The minimum fine of £50 was imposed by Mr. W. C. Harley, S.M., on Alfred William Burton, dental mechanic, who admitted a charge laid under the Distillation Act that he unlawfully made spirits. He had a small retort made of chemist's apparatus capable of making about two pints of spirit at a time.
