BRIGADIER DITTMER
COMMAND- IN' FIJI
STH. PACIFIC BASE, July 20.
Under the principle of unity of command and with the concurrence of the Commander of the South Pacific (ViceAdmiral Newton), Brigadier George Dittmer, N.Z.E.F. in Pacific, is desipnated as Temporary Commanding General of the Second Island Command, Fiji Colonel Andrew J. Evans. United Stales Infantry, assumes com* mand of the United States forces there. Brigadier Dittmer's appointment is significant of the changes taking place in this area since the main Pacific centrn of operations moved to the Central Pacific.
Brigadier . G. Dittmer, M.8.E., D.5.0., M.C., has been Commandant of the Fiji Military Forces, which exclude American forces, for most of this year. He served in both the last war and this war. He was the first commanding officer of the 28th Maori Battalion, and led it with great distinction until he was brought back to New Zealand to help train the home defence forces which were mobilisedto meet the Japanese threat. He went to Fiji after the demobilisation of the greater part of the home defence forces. ___^
