MR. ROBERT MCLEAN
Waipukurau lost one .of its bestknown citizens on Friday last week in the death of Mr. Robert McLean, who served for many years as a member of its council and was from 1926 to 1932 its Mayor. His work following the Napier earthquake in 1931 in organising billets for thousands of refugees made him widely known and much admired. Mr. McLean, who went to Waipukurau in 1906, set up the motor garage business of R. McLean and Co. in 1908. Since 1927 he had been the Waipukurau representative on the Napier' Harbour Board, and he was also a member of the licensing committee and school committee. He associated himself with many branches of sport, including racing, bowling, and golf, also with the Boy Scout movement. In 1936 he was awarded the Coronation Medal of King • George VI in recognition of his notable public service. He belonged to the Manchester Unity of Oddfellows and .was a member of the Loyal Ruataniwha Lodge of Past Grands.
