MEAT INDUSTRY
MONEY FOR EXPANSION
An explanation was given to the House of Representatives yesterday afternoon by the Minister of Finance (Mr. Nash) indicating the intention of a Finance Bill clause which authorises appropriations to be made from any account established by the Marketing Act towards the capital expenditure needed to meet wartime requirements or conditions after the war in connection with the industry for which any special account has been established.
Mr. Nash said that the expenditure would be for expansion of production or for providing additional storage space, and the money would come from the Meat Pool Account. There had already been expenditure of this kind with the approval of the meat industry, and the report of the Meat Board last year set out the agreement which was arrived at with the industry. From this account could be deducted the cost of purchasing meat products and the erection and operation of cool storage and canning plants, which had totalled £675,000.
Mr. M. H. Oram (National, Manawatu) asked why the account was not specifically mentioned, and was assured by the Minister that this could be done if necessary, as was the case with the Dairy Industry Account in 1942.
