; The Netherlands Minister in Can* , berra, Baron van Aerssen Beyeren van} j Voshol has informed General Douglas I Mac Arthur that Queen Wilhelmina f of* the Netherlands has created. him! a Knight Grand Cross, with Swords (Military Division) in the Order of Oranje-Nassau, one of the highest Royal ! awards of the Netherlands. It has ' been awarded to General Mac Arthur iri; tribute to his great leadership and the ' magnificent work achieved by him in! the first steps towards the liberation! of the Netherlands Indies. Thei . Netherlands authorities state that ' when, in the dark days of 1942, it 5 was announced that General Mac- . Arthur had been appointed Com-j t mander-in-Chief of the South-west! i Pacific, the news was a gleam of light ] for all Dutchmen and Indonesians, who . by then had lost almost everything/ "The way in which he first managed to halt the Japanese advance with a 1 few available Allied forces, while preparing at the same time the Allied' counter-offensive, filled them with admiration. This admiration has been further increased by his brilliant and audacious strategy which has cut off whole Japanese armies and exposed them to starvation. The complete liberation of the Philippine Islands and the Netherlands Indies, to which Mac Arthur pledged himself, commenced with the liberation of Hollandia and North-western New Guinea. This crucial moment has been chosen by Queen Wilhelmina to award the very high honour to a great anJ chivalrous soldier." The Queen knows General Mac Arthur personally. In-. 1928 he led the American Delegation to the Olympic Games in Holland, and was then presented to Her Majesty. The Order of Oranje-Nassau was established in 1892 for honourable re« ward of Nether landers or others who rendered outstanding services to th« Queen and the Kingdom of the Netherlands.
