NEW PICTURES BOUGHT

A number of pictures purchased for the National Art Gallery were formally accepted at a meeting of the board of trustees of the National Art Gallery and Dominion Museum held last week. These were:—"Miss Edith Bryant" (portrait in oils), by A. Elizabeth Kelly; "Three Gipsies at Lauguedoc, Southern France" (water colour), by W. Russell Flint; "Lazy Afternoon"----(oil painting), by E. Heber Thompson; "Iona" (oil painting), by S. J. Peploe; "The Artist's Wife" (oil painting), by R. O. Dunlop; "The Drawing Lesson" (chalk drawing), by James Grant; "Quinta and Clare" (drawing), by Robert Austin; "Takaka River" (Avater colour), by Cedric Savage. With the exception of the portrait by Elizabeth Kelly and the Avater colour by Cedric Savage, the pictures mentioned came from the collection introduced from England for the Centennial Exhibition. Other paintings accepted were the tAvo gift pictures from the Sir Percy Sargood Trust: "Two Bridges, Knaresborough," by P. Wilson Sleer. and "Figure in Sunlight," by W. G. de Glenn. . The new deputy chairman, the Mayor of Wellington (Mr. Appleton) presided. Committees were elected ar, follows:—Art Gallery management committee: Nominated by N.Z. Academy of Fine Arts, Messrs. A. F. Nicoll, Richard Gross, W. S. Wauchop, Nugent Welch, S. B. McLennan, Cedric Savage, and Mrs. Murray Fuller: representing the board Messrs. G. G. G. Watson (chairman) and S. W. Fearne. Museum management committee: Nominated by Royal Society, Professors H. B. Kirk (chairman) and J. Rankine Brown, Drs. B. Marshall, J. C. Anderson, C. G. Morice. H. H. Allan, and Mr. G. V. Hudson; appointed by board, Messrs. W. H. Price and W. L. Fitzhcrbert. Carillon management committee: Nominated by Carillon Society, Messrs. E. E. Muir (chairman), E. C. Hale, Robert Johnson, and J. G. Osborne; appointed by board, Messrs. E. E. Muir and L. T. Jacobsen.
