DETENTION PERIOD
PETITION FOR REVIEW
A petition to the House of Representees asking that the Government should revietv its policy in relation to military defaulters, was presented by 'Mr. W. T. Anderton (Government, •Eden) yesterday. It was signed by ■"Messrs. W. G. T. Airey, LaAvrence W. jHolt (lecturers at Auckland University College), and 6000 others.
, The petitioners expressed the vieAv. that the work being done by 700 military defaulters in the detention camps ■was futile and unconstructive. The British Government, they declared, rtook the view that tivo years should •be the maximum period of detention for this offence. It was a matter for concern that in New Zealand the detention period should be indefinite. Petitioners urged that as it was contrary to the principles.of British justice to detain any person ekcept a habitual criminal for. an indefinite term, military defaulters should be released after serving tivo years in detention camps.
