AUSTRALIAN NEED OF COAL
CANBERRA, July 26.; A ivartime target of at least 1,200,000 tons of coal a month is understood to haA'e been set by the Prime Minister, (Mr. J. Curtin). This is 200,000 tons more than Australia's peak production in 1942 and probably 300,000 tons more than present production. It is agreed;" however, that the target is not beyond Australia's capacity and involves no interference Avith mining conditions. A demand for this amount of coal is understood to have been conveyed t<_ the colliery oAvners and the Miners', Federation. Following on -their separate talks with Mr. Curtin in Canberra* a joint conference of all parties will be held in Sydney. Mr. Curtin revealed that the Miners' Federation had submitted to him a scheme for Commonwealth pensions for mine Avorkers and that he had undertaken k> bring the proposal before Cabinet. The scheme would replace the existing State pension schemes, the most important of which operates in N_av South Wales, under ivhich the miners contribute 2s 6d a iveek and the owners 5d for.every ton of coal. .
