RUBBER SUPPLIES
AMERICA NOW INDEPENDENT*
NEW YORK, July 261
"America is noAV mdependent ot rubber from the Far East," declared Colonel Bradley DeAvey, the Rubber Director, Avhose office today became the first wartime agency voluntarily to surrender its .powers because the task for ivhich it Avas established has been accomplished.
Colonel DeAvey explained that the annual production of synthetic rub--ber Avas 836,000 long tons, compared Avith the pre-Avar crude rubber imports of 600,000 long tons. •!
Commenting on the post-Avar situa; tion, he said he was of the opinion that the synthetic rubber industry Avould stand on its oavii feet. It would not need tariff protection from the competition of natural rubber, because synthetic rubber Avould sell at from 1_ to 16 cents a pound in the world's; markets, and tlie producers of natural! rubber would have to tie their prices to the synthetic level instead of vice A'ersa, as everyone had expected. .>.>
