"BACKS TO THE WALL"
NAZI DESPERATION
LONDON, July 26.
The "Dailv Mail" describes "Hitler's < decrees for'the total mobilisation of 1 the German home front as a "backs ■ to the wall" pronouncement affecting every corner of Europe under German control, and a last desperate at- ; tempt to hold the crumbling Avails ot - the German fortress. Avhich will be • combed for the last man for the Wehrmacht and the armament indus- ; try. Goering, it says, becomes "the i dictator of Europe," ivith Goebbels charged Avith the job of carrying ; through the final phase of the mobilisation inside the Reich. "More men! : More men!" is now the cry. "There can be no doubt that the conspiracy against the regime did considerable harm to* the fighting strength in the field," said General Dietmar, the War Office spokesman, over Berlin radio. "It is certain that measures Avhich the conspirators carried outmeasures which they intended as a remedy for the critical situation on the Eastern Front—caused some delay. The conspiracy was particularly important because it came when our reserve army Avas being eaten into by the Soviet commanders' victory in the area of the central Vistula. Our answer, first, must be to have at our disposal a gi'eat mass of reserves. Some of our measures will appear in a very short time. The aim is to stabilise the Eastern Front not only for a short time but finally. This aim has justified anything the German nation may require to do. "The treachery of July was a fotce that wanted to destroy, but instead it has created our unbreakable will to Avin. Even today, when the flood of enemy masses is at the gate of the Fatherland, it is not too late. CALL FOR FEVERISH WORK. "Our most important job is to gain time to accomplish and finish our task, and this justifies any exertion 1 and improvisation. The enemy fully ! realises this. His measures are char- ! acterised by an enormous effort to get ia decision with the utmost speed. We imust get time to complete what is still in the making. Our enemies . m the east, Avest. and south are stepping up their speed, and we have to -meet their haste Avith feverish work. The. treacherous deed of July 20 has ievealed the full seriousness of our posiUT_e chief editor of the German overseas news agency, Georg Schioeder, said: "An extraordinary amount of power has been placed in the hands of Dr. Goebbels. This is the result of July 20. The failure of the conspiracy brought to the consciousness of everyone in Germany the danger which hung over the German people. It can be expected that Dr. Goebbels, n carrying out the Fuhrer's decree, w 1 leave out no part of public life. Pivate economy, commerce, 'transport, entertainment, and culture aviU. all_.be the subjects of relentless scrutiny. German newspapers say that Himmler has decided to decrease the number/of German regular army troops inside Germany and to replace them ivith storm troopers.
