BATTLE FOR HENGYANG
CHUNGKING, July 25. The battle for Hengyang is near a climax as the Japanese have compressed their ring about the besieged city and repelled Chinese relief columns. The fall of Hengyang Avill probably presage a full-scale offensive southivards to close the 170-mile gap in the Canton-Hankow railway, permitting an unbroken Japanese span of 1000 miles from north to south.
