MORE PAPER NEEDED
To Fill War Needs
More paper is needed by the Waste1 .-*. Reclamation Committee, and both ; business houses: and htmes throughout the city are asked to co-operate; otherwise the requirements of the mills for wartime supplies cannot be met, said Mr. R. L. prant, chairman of the committee, today. Some time ago the depot staff was increased so that the larger intake which must be gathered could be handled, and. because Wellington ,>
people have slacked off with their waste paper contributions the men have barely enough to keep them going. Any firm with a substantial amount of .paper is asked to ring the depot, 42-856, and householders are again reminded of the house-to-house collection by school children every ■Wednesday.. All schools are on the telephone, and' collectors will call for household bundles. The indication of the falling off is given by the greater amount of paper put out in rubbish bins, both in the city and the suburbs.
ployed on a weekly basis only. The overtime rate is time and a half for the first four hours, thereafter double, and all work done on Christmas Day, Anzac Day, Good Friday, or on Sunday is to be paid for at double rates; and for work' on other holidays, to be paid time and a half, provided that all work done in attendance to forcing stoves, greenhouses; frames, or bush houses on Sunday or holidays shall be paid for at ordinary rates. Wages shall be paid for the holidays mentioned to all workers who have been employed at any time during the fortnight ending on the day of the holiday. The award provides for accommodation, suburban work, country work, and under-rate workers.
Mr. Prime dissents, on the ground that the factors which appear to the majority of the Court to justify increases were present and no doubt considered when the rates in the expired award were fixed, and, having regard to the fact that wage increases generally do not appear likely to promote economic stability, is unable to agree that the increases awarded are justified.
