AWAPUNI SCHOOLING

AUTHORESS RECOVERED

(Special to "The Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day.

Though there were, several useful gallops at Awapuni yesterday morning the jumpers attracted most interest. The weather was fine, but there was a bleak wind. On the course proper, where the going was good, the fast work was done next to the rails. The outstanding gallop over seven furlongs was that of Phalaria, and on it depended his Wellington trip. Ridden by S. Waddell, he galloped with TauUru (A. G. Waddell), and was soon well clear. Tau-Uru made some impression on him over the last halffur long, but,Phalaria finished strongly to cover the full distance in 1.35, the last five in 1.8, and the last three in 42 l-ssec. Another pleasing gallop was that of Classform and Hakim. They travelled seven furlongs and maintained an even pace until just short of the post, where Classform speeded up to be half a length to the good. They' covered the last six in 1.24 2-5 and the last three in 41 3-ssec. Both could have done better. Pennyroyal (J. Bowness) and Observatory (J. Jenkins) were together and going really well at the end of six furlongs, the last live in 1.8 3-5 and the last three in 41sec. Abdicate (S. Waddell) was clear of Greek Effort (M. Andrews) at the end of a mile in 1.51 3-5. They came home the last three in 42 4-ss6c. Po-Huka and Aristocrat broke 1.40 for seven furlongs, both galloping well. Kinsman and Impromptu travelled evenly over seven in 1.40 3-5. THE SCHOOLING HURDLES. The conditions were good for jumping and the exhibitions over the schooling hurdles were of a high standard. Authoress (A. Midw.ood), quite recovered from the fall she had at the Patriotic Meeting, Young Charles (A. Howai-d), and Sandy Cape (W. J. Stevens) went twice round. Young Charles was inclined to take things easily at the start, but he improved as he warmed up and the three of them gave a grand display of fast jumping. Though he trailed the others to the last hurdle, Young Charles was shaken up to be with them at the post. Moderate (Stevens) went twice round with Lightfair (Howard). The pace was on all the way and Lightfair, on the inner, held a slight advantage as they went, in to jump the ear, lier fences. It was a splendid exhibition. ■

Sporting Gold (T. Paul)' went twice round, giving a sound display of fast jumping. Northfleld (H. Murray) jumped cleanly with the' pace slow for the first time round. He did better with the pace on. .

Colonel Bogey (Murray) went by himself, giving his usual satisfactory display.

Riding engagements, for Hastings include:—W. J. Broughton, Findon, Boulder Dam, Glad Fox; S. Waddell, Kinneff, Kincrop, Ausar; A. G. Waddell, Catterick Bridge.

Substantial Frames. —A particularly big three-year-old filly by Nightly from Lady Ann is being got ready for racing by H. C. Nesbit at Trentham. She looks an ideal type for the jumping game, and has already shown ability in that department. Her elder halfbrother, Great Quex, did particularly well as a hurdler. ; The name Hegina Nox has been registered for her. The trainer is also working a four-year-old gelding by Spear Dance from Mazatuko, a Last Dart mare who traces to imported Mazabuka. A hnlfbrother'to Palanui, he'has very solid quarters, having been running out since being broken as a yearling.
