P.A. CHRISTCHURCH, June 25. Hacked about the face arid head, apparently by an axe, the body of Fred Brazier, about 64, was found on Saturday morning in a small back room in a house at 115 Aldwin's Road. The occupier of the house, Mrs. Helen Lewis, 32, was arrested and charged with murder. i

Little is known about the dead man, who came to board with Mrs. Lewis within the past six months. The police have not yet traced any of his -. relatives or anyone who knew him intimately. No one even knows yet where he came from to occupy the room where he met his death. Mrs. Lewis is*the wife of an employee in the Government Broadcasting Service engaged on painting masts at various broadcasting stations. For some time past he has been working in Dunedin. Neighbours heard two outbursts of screaming in a woman's voice during the night. Aircraftman W. A. Harris, who lives next door to No. 115, said that he was awakened by screams and sounds as of furniture being shifted, about 2 a.m. and again at about 4 a.m. He did not interfere.

During Saturday afternoon the police received a telephone message to the effect that Mrs. Lewis had reported a tragedy at her home. When Sergeant S. Holder and Detective E. G. Ward went to the place they found the house locked and the blinds drawn, and had to force an entry. They took possession of two axes. The investigation was continued by Sub-Inspector J. B. Young and Detective-Sergeant J. J. Halcrow.

At a special sitting of the Magistrate's Court in the Detective Office on Saturday afternoon, Mrs. Lewis was charged before Mr. E. C. Levvey, S.M., with the murder of Brazier. A woman constable stood by her. She was not represented by counsel and said nothing. On the application of-.Sub-Inspector Young, for the police, the Magistrate granted a remand to Friday next. The police stated that a postmortem would be held, and an inquest would be opened for purpose of identification on Monday.
